About the Event
The Hampton Roads Sea Level Rise Preparedness and Resilience Intergovernmental Planning Pilot Project, the product of a White House-announced collaboration to launch "Preparedness Pilots", bringing together federal agencies in select communities, including the Hampton Roads area, to assess and plan for climate-related vulnerabilities.
The project was initiated two years ago by Old Dominion University, federal agencies, state and local communities in a “whole government” approach led by the Department of Defense and the US Navy. It addressed threats posed by sea level rise in the Hampton Roads area, including the world’s largest Navy base among military assets at risk. Following the 2013 Presidential Executive Order on Climate Change, the pilot project undertook the order’s direction by developing climate resilience and preparedness measures at the regional level with emphasis on impacts to national security and the economy.
This pilot project culminated at a high-level event at the World Resources Institute in Washington DC, with a presentation and panel discussion of key findings and recommendations for planning and implementing regional resilience measures.
