Moazzam Malik

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 13, 2022) — World Resources Institute is delighted to announce that Moazzam Malik will be joining its leadership team as the Managing Director for Global Delivery.  Malik will champion WRI’s mission in Asia and the Middle East, and oversee the institutional infrastructure and systems required to deliver WRI’s ambitious global strategy and country strategies. He will lead Operations, Finance, Communications and HR, support WRI’s international offices in China, India and Indonesia, and use his expertise to collaborate with multilateral institutions and regional partners.

With the addition of Malik, WRI’s new team of Managing Directors is now complete, including Adriana Lobo, Managing Director, Global Presence and National Action; Wanjira Mathai, Managing Director, Africa and Global Partnerships; Janet Ranganathan, Managing Director, Strategy, Learning and Results; and Craig Hanson, Managing Director, Programs. This new team will build on their 70 years of collective service to WRI to help enact the next generation of WRI’s global strategy, focusing on impactful in-country work with a diverse ecosystem of partners.

"Moazzam brings an exceptional breadth and depth of knowledge about the challenges and opportunities facing people and the planet,” said Ani Dasgupta, President & CEO, WRI. “His decades of leadership experience and real-world expertise around policy development will be an enormous asset to WRI. With the addition of Moazzam, WRI’s leadership team is fully equipped for its next era of strategic focus and impact."

Prior to joining WRI, Malik served as the Director General for Africa at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) for the United Kingdom. He led government policy on Africa, including the network of embassies across the continent; and oversaw thematic directorates covering open societies and human rights, conflict, and international finance. He was previously the British Ambassador to Indonesia, Timor-Leste and ASEAN; and has held a range of senior roles at the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

“Moazzam brings unparalleled global experience to WRI,” said Frances Beinecke, Member, WRI Global Board of Directors. “His nuanced understanding of humanitarian operations and policy issues, combined with his first hand experience in Africa, Asia and the Middle East will be an invaluable addition to WRI’s leadership team.”

In his role as Managing Director, Malik will ensure that WRI is a truly global organization, where every WRI office and staff member is enabled to deliver the highest quality impact. Bringing a keen understanding of what is needed for WRI to deliver its ambitious global strategy, Malik will lead WRI’s core functions to help build and align WRI’s systems and capacity with country strategies; and he will champion the work of WRI’s international offices including in Beijing, Delhi and Jakarta.

“WRI is a world-class organization working on some of the toughest and most urgent challenges facing the planet. At a time of great geo-political uncertainty, I am excited about deepening collaboration with WRI’s partners around the world,” said Moazzam Malik.  “If climate change is caused by human behavior, then we must put people at the center of all solutions. Drawing on my experiences in Africa, Asia and the Middle East, I am looking forward to working with WRI’s teams to put people at the heart of our environment and development work as we strive to deliver global impact.”
